The teaching process at Karachi University was suspended on Thursday on an appeal of the students alliance on the issue of late fees, while the administrative offices were closed.

A three-member committee has been constituted to review the late fee waiver/concession requests submitted by students under the directions Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Mehmood Iraqi. Acting Registrar Dr Abdul Waheed formally issued a notification in this regard.

The committee is mandated to thoroughly assess each application based on the documents and proofs provided by the applicants concerning their income and financial status. The committee will have the authority to recommend a late fee waiver of up to 40 percent to the vice chancellor, following a careful evaluation of the merits of each case. The recommendations should be made objectively and in alignment with the guidelines set forth by the institution.

Dr Fayyaz Waid, professor of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, University of Karachi, will be the convener of the committee, while Dr Nosheen Raza, student adviser, and Dr Ziasma Hanif Khan, in-charge of the Student Financial Aid, will be members.

According to the University of Karachi, 12,459 students have not deposited the semester fees, and the evening and morning students alone owe Rs1,678 million, including Rs303 million as late fees.
