0.9pc duty on import consignments
Punjab dry ports go on strike
From Our Correspondent
MULTAN: All dry ports across the Punjab on Monday went on strike for indefinite period against the Punjab Revenue Authority for levying 0.9 per cent duty on import consignments.
Talking to newsmen here, Multan Dry Port Trust chairman Muhammad Ahmad Chughtai said that the decision to observe strike was taken at a meeting held in Faisalabad. The meeting was attended by the chairmen and officials of the Multan Dry Port, Sialkot Dry Port, Faisalabad Dry Port and All Pakistan Customs Clearing Agents Association, he added. He expressed his concern over levy of 0.9pc duty on import consignments by the Punjab government and said that it would have negative impacts.
He said that the unilateral decision of the Punjab government would tantamount to annihilate the import business at the dry ports. He said that the industrial sector was already in deep crisis and the new tax would further aggravate the situation. He demanded the government withdraw the tax to save the sector.
