Efforts urged to resolve livestock sector problems

FAISALABAD: Various livestock diseases and low per animal milk productivity are causing billions of rupees loss for which efforts are needed to address the issue.

It was stated by University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan while talking to the participants of a workshop arranged by the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, here on Monday. The VC said that if we analyse milk production in livestock sector, an animal milk production was only 2,000 litres per annum as compare to 8,000 litres in the developed nations. He said that the UAF in collaboration with the University of California, Davis, was revising the curriculum of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to make it as per international standards. He said that although the country was one of largest producer of milk but per animal milk production was very low. He said that livestock sector was contributing 12 per cent to the GDP out of 21 per cent share of agriculture. He said that foot and mouth diseases were causing a hug loss to this sector. He said that the UAF had developed mastitis vaccine and surf field mastitis diagnostics kit to overcome diseases and introduced anti-parasitic medicine for animals. Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal said that the faculty had set up different groups to promote research and outreach activities and cement academia industry linkages. He said that the country could save millions of dollars by producing various vaccines to minimize its import. He said that the skilled manpower enriched with motivation were imperative to fulfill the dreams of the development and prosperity. Progressive farmer Basharat Jasphal said that with the increasing cost of animals, the demand of veterinary doctors was on the rise. He urged the young doctors to have the maximum experience of field work in order to get the success in the practical life. Dr Ahrar Ahmad said that 160 students of veterinary sciences had completed their internship this year that would help the country to promote livestock sector.

 

 

‘Rs 35b safe city project being launched in five cities’

FAISALABAD: The safe city project is being launched in five cities - Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi and Multan - at a cost of Rs 35 billion, said Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.

Talking to newsmen here on Monday, he said that the cities would be watched through cameras from rooms and no criminal could escape after committing the crime. He said that the Punjab government had taken revolutionary steps to make working of different departments inline with the modern technology for good governance. He claimed that the deep-rooted patwar culture had been eliminated through the land record management information system, which was a great achievement of the government.

Likewise, the thana culture would also be eradicated through modern technology by the Punjab government, the minister said, adding that the system of front desks had yielded successful results under which track number was being issued to every complainant and the Police Department itself contacted the complainant in lieu of pursuing his application. He said that the information technology experts had been deputed at the front desks in plainclothes, who welcomed the applicants with courtesy and good behaviour, which was a remarkable change in the working of police stations. The minister claimed that the Asia’s first and the world’s second big and modern forensic laboratory had been established at a cost of Rs 10 billion.

Earlier, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan visited Kotwali police station and inspected its front desks. He said that establishment of front desks in the police stations was an important and significant step towards the elimination of thana culture in the province. In this connection, front desks had so far been established in more than 200 police stations across, he added.

Rana Sanaullah checked the working and performance of the front desk and inquired about the methodology of receiving applications from the complainants. He advised the staff to perform their duties with devotion and give due respect to each and every complainant. RPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana, CPO Afzal Ahmad Kausar and other officers were also present on the occasion.
