KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), a key player in the oil and gas exploration sector, has announced the commencement of hydrocarbon production from its newly developed well, Adhi South-9, located in Punjab’s Pothwar region.

This significant development was reported in a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday. The notice detailed the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its production capacity in a region that has been pivotal for its operations. PPL said, “We are pleased to disclose that as part of our continuous efforts towards increasing production of oil and gas, production has commenced from Adhi South-9, a new development well drilled in the Adhi Mining Lease, which is operated by the company with a 39 per cent working interest. Our joint venture partners, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL), hold 50 per cent and 11 per cent working interests, respectively.”

The Adhi South-9 well was successfully drilled to a depth of 3,430 metres and has been completed as a producer based on encouraging log results. Following the successful tie-in of the well with the processing plant, PPL reported that production has commenced at an impressive rate of 530 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and 0.6 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas.

Located approximately 70 kilometres south of Islamabad, the Adhi field has a long history of exploration, beginning in 1956. Over the course of a decade, four wells were drilled in the area, and crude oil production commenced in the early 1980s from the Sakesar reservoir. The Adhi field has since become a significant contributor to Pakistan's energy supply, with major clients including Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) for gas, Attock Refinery Limited for LNG and crude oil, and various LPG marketing companies.

In recent months, PPL has shown a proactive approach to increasing its hydrocarbon output. Earlier in July, the company announced the commencement of hydrocarbon production from the Adhi South-8 well. Last year, PPL began production from the Adhi South-6 well. This series of developments highlights PPL’s commitment to meeting the growing energy demands of Pakistan while maximizing its operational efficiency. Industry analysts suggest that the successful production from Adhi South-9 could bolster PPL’s position in the market, allowing the company to contribute more significantly to the country’s energy needs amid ongoing challenges in the sector.
