MULTAN: Transmission and distribution (T&D) losses are the biggest challenge across the energy sector as these losses in Pakistan are much higher than the global average, ranging from 9.5pc to 35.1pc in different distribution companies. However, T&D line losses in Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) declined by 0.9pc to 14.9pc in the first quarter of FY 2024-25.

The Mepco Chief Executive Officer Engineer Jam Gul Mohammad Zahid Monday said that Mepco has saved 140.1 million units due to operations against electricity thieves and system upgrades. The company earned Rs 5.620 billion in profit during the first quarter of the current financial year. The line losses during the first three months of the last financial year 2023-24 were 15.8 per cent, which declined to 0.9pc in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Mepco surveillance teams conducted an operation against electricity thieves along with the forces. They conducted targeted operations on high-loss feeders across the region and got substantial results, Mepco officials said. Meanwhile, Mepco Multan Circle Superintending Engineer Operation Circle Amjad Nawaz Bhatti said that all Sub Divisional Complaint Centers of Multan Circle have started online working.
