This refers to the letter ‘Running dry’ (October 5, 2024) by Khan Faraz. The letter discusses the country’s declining water resources. This situation is likely to worsen given Indian threats to cut down our water supplies. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed through joint planning and efforts by the federal and provincial governments and the Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir governments as well. The people must also be involved. There is a need to build large-scale national awareness, so the whole country is fully familiar with the exact problem and the need to preserve and utilise water wisely.
Also, there should be a special focus on educating and training young people and women in water conservation and management techniques, particularly in rural agricultural areas. The national media, governmental departments, and NGOs must also be properly briefed, trained and equipped to participate in a water preservation plan or campaign. Only if we can achieve such basic coordination and unity can we expect any successful results. Such planning and implementation should begin at the earliest.
