LAHORE: Syed Azhar Husnain Abidi, a prominent educationist and career counselor, recently delivered an insightful presentation titled “Authoring a PhD and Postdoc at International Universities” to MPhil students at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore. 

The session, held at the university’s main campus, was attended by students from both the main and sub-campuses via video link.

In his presentation, Abidi emphasised the vast research opportunities available in the fields of veterinary and animal sciences, particularly in countries like the UK, USA, and across Europe. He highlighted the importance of early preparation, focusing on the creation of a professional CV and a well-crafted research proposal. Through an engaging presentation, Abidi outlined the key components of a strong CV and explained the crucial steps in developing a research proposal that aligns with a student’s academic interests and degree focus.

Abidi further elaborated on the various stages of pursuing a PhD, detailing the process over a typical three-year duration. He stressed the significance of identifying a qualified and relevant supervisor, which he described as a pivotal factor in ensuring the success of a PhD journey. Maintaining consistent communication with supervisors, he noted, is essential for the timely approval of a PhD thesis.

In his address, Abidi also discussed the emerging research areas in veterinary and animal sciences that are currently receiving the most funding and grants from international universities. He encouraged students to begin their research early, selecting topics that not only align with their academic interests but also have promising career prospects both in Pakistan and abroad.

Highlighting top-ranking research institutions in the field, Abidi urged students to engage in continuous reading of academic journals and research materials. He provided valuable insights into the scholarship and grant application processes, offering detailed guidance on the necessary documentation and strategies for writing a compelling research proposal. The session was a comprehensive guide to navigating the competitive landscape of securing grants and admissions at prestigious global universities.

The presentation concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where Abidi responded to various queries from the attendees. The event was brought to a close with a vote of thanks from UVAS VC Prof Dr M Younas Rana.

Also present were Dr Aneela Zameen Durrani, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Prof Dr Rana Ayyub, Chairman of Economics & Business Management Dept, and the event’s organiser, Dr Sakhra Mahmood, Director of Advanced Studies. Dr Syed Bilal Ahmed Shah, Assistant Director of Advanced Studies, moderated the session.
