Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, former president Dr Arif Alvi, and other politicians and dignitaries on Thursday attended the funeral prayers for former National Assembly speaker and veteran politician Elahi Bux Soomro who had passed away a day earlier.
The funeral prayers were held at Soomro’s residence on Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan Road in District South. He will be laid to rest on Friday (today) in Jacobabad, his home district.
An engineer by profession, Soomro was born in Jacobabad.
Other dignitaries who attended the funeral prayers included former leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Nehal Hashmi.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound grief and sorrow over the passing away of the former National Assembly speaker, and prayed for his soul.
The PM recalled that late Soomro had discharged his duties very well as the custodian of the lower house of Parliament. He said Soomro’s demise meant that Pakistan had been deprived of an intelligent and scholarly politician.
In his condolence message, the CM prayed that the bereaved family be granted strength to bear the irreparable loss caused by Soomro’s death.
In his condolence message, Sindh Pakistan Muslim League-Functional Secretary General Sardar Abdul Rahim recalled the role played by the late speaker on the legislation front.
