A sessions court has sentenced a street criminal to seven-year imprisonment in a robbery case. Muhammad Irfan, alias Burha, was found guilty of robbing a citizen within the jurisdiction of the Landhi police station in 2022.

Additional Sessions Judge (East) Shahid Ali Memon observed that the prosecution had established its case against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt as the testimony of witnesses supported by corroborative evidence and findings of investigation convincingly implicated the accused in the commission of the crime.

The accused, who appeared on bail, was taken into custody following the pronouncement of the order and remanded to prison to serve out the sentence. The judge put the case against the convict’s absconding accomplices, Abdullah and Abdur Rehman, alias Chachoo, on dormant file until they were arrested.

“Nowadays, the crime of robbery/dacoity is on rise in Karachi and no one could feel secure at the hands of muggers and the impact of such insecurity affects the social and economic activities in the city,” noted the judge.

“Therefore under such circumstances, release of looters would amount to encourage them for committing the similar crimes fearlessly.”

According to State Prosecutor Syed Khursheed Bukhari, on January 31, 2022, complainant Haseeb Bin Tariq was returning home on his motorcycle after meeting his friend when three persons on a motorcycle intercepted him in the Landhi 89 area. They robbed him of his mobile phone, wallet containing Rs3,500 cash and identity documents at gunpoint.

The accused was later arrested and went on to face trial in the case. The prosecutor argued that the prosecution proved its case against the accused persons beyond any shadow of doubt by producing sufficient evidence.

In his statement recorded under the Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the accused claimed that the police in order to show their efficiency had not only booked him in a false case but also foisted recovery of alleged mobile phone on him.
