Last series success makes us confident: Root

ISLAMABAD: England’s top batsman Joe Root is confident of repeating the 2022 series performance, saying that that particular success gives the tourists a big heart to start confidently.

In a media talk a couple of days ahead of the start of the three-match Test series against Pakistan, Root said that the tourists achieved unprecedented success the last time they were here. “That series’ success is still at the back of our minds. Though it is all fresh now and a new beginning that series success makes us feel all positive.”

Root praised Pakistan, saying despite that previous series success, England will have to be at their best to beat Pakistan. “Pakistan is a quality team and have got the home advantage also. We have to be at our best to beat them. As a host nation, Pakistan have got some quality cricketers in their ranks.”

The England middle-order batsman said that adaptability would be the key factor. “Kookaburra ball is quite different from Duke. Some early swing or spin later in the Test, it is the adaptability that holds importance for us.”

On pitch condition, Root said he did not see it closely. “Apparently it has grass on it but you never know how it will be going into the first day of the Test. As a professional cricketer, we should be ready for all types of conditions.”

Root who has scored over 12000 Test runs and is threatening to break S. Tendulkar’s record said individual records were never on his mind. “It is all about contributing to the team’s success which is more important for me. My effort has always been to help the team win each game where I play. That goal keeps me driving towards making extra effort.”

Root was not ready to discard Pakistan altogether for the three-match series. “We are just concentrating on the first Test. You cannot think beyond five days. I am in no position to predict yet another whitewash against Pakistan. They have got a quality team and have all the ability to bounce back.”

On the new combination of fast bowling, he said it was a good opportunity for the young England bowlers to deliver and make a permanent name on the team.

“We have got a new combination with more experienced pacers not there to lead the attack. Yet I feel it is a big opportunity for the youngsters to make an impact.”

On Ben Stoke’s fitness, he said he had been working hard to get fit. “I am not captain and cannot reply as to how fit and ready he is but he has been working hard and eager to lead the team.”
