LAHORE: The prime minister has been urged to intervene and halt the proposed decision to declare daily wage workers employed by the federal government as surplus amidst the current phase of high inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
These workers have been serving diligently for years in various government bodies.
In a press statement on Thursday, Khurshid Ahmad, General Secretary of the All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions, appealed to the prime minister to stop this decision, which would cause severe economic and social hardship for the affected workers.
He said labour laws stipulate that workers who have performed their duties diligently for at least nine months should be regularised. However, due to a ban on recruitment, these daily wage workers were hired to meet organisational needs. It would be unjust to declare these dedicated workers as surplus.
