LAHORE:The 16th syndicate meeting of Nishtar Medical University held in Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department here under the chairmanship of Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique.

The meeting was attended by Special Secretary Development Syed Wajid Ali Shah, Additional Secretary Finance Sidra Salim and Deputy Secretary Hamad-ur-Rab. Member of Punjab Assembly Faiza Maimoona, Vice Chancellor of Nishtar Medical University Prof Mehnaz Khakwani, KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Mahmood Ayaz, Shahid Imtiaz from Law Department, Registrar and Special Secretary Higher Education participated in the meeting. Officers of the other departments participated as syndicate members. Registrar of the university presented the agenda.

During the meeting, the statutes of Nishtar Medical University were approved. During the syndicate meeting, budget of Nishtar Hospital 1 and 2 Multan was approved. More funds were also approved for the revamping of government teaching hospitals attached to Nishtar Medical University.

Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said that the Punjab government wanted to bring a uniform policy to resolve the issues of all medical universities in Punjab. There will be no compromise on the supply of medicines to government hospitals of Punjab.

He further said that instructions had been issued to hold syndicate meetings of medical universities regularly to resolve the issues of the government hospitals. ‘We are committed to making government hospitals, funded by public taxes, the best healthcare facilities.’ The minister also directed all the medical universities of Punjab to promote quality research.

Campuses asked to to ensure helmet wearing

Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab has directed VCs of public sector universities and principals of colleges to ensure mandatory helmet wearing for students and faculty members while riding bikes.

In a letter to the heads of educational institutions, the department suggested banning the entry of individuals to universities and colleges and suspension of parking privileges etc. The letter cited an increasing number of road accidents involving motorbikes resulting in head injuries and fatalities.
