PESHAWAR: A resolution was moved in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly by MPA Asif Khan Mehsud from Upper South Waziristan, advocating for the renaming of the district as Mehsud Tribal District.
The resolution emphasized that over 90 percent of the population in the district belonged to the Mehsud tribe, rendering the current name culturally irrelevant and lacking representation.“The identity of a district should reflect the culture and history of its people. Renaming South Waziristan Upper as Mehsud Tribal District is a step toward acknowledging the significant presence and contributions of the Mehsud tribe,” said Asif Khan Mehsud.
Drawing comparisons to other tribal districts such as Mohmand, Bajaur, and Orakzai, which are named after the majority tribes living there, Asif Khan underscored the importance of aligning the district’s name with its cultural heritage. “This renaming will bring the district in line with others, fostering cultural recognition and unity,” he added.
