ATHENS: Greek firefighters on Sunday announced that they had found the body of a German tourist who had been missing for two days on the southern island of Crete.
The man in his 60s had set off on a hike with members of his family on Friday in the mountainous Chania prefecture in western Crete, but they had returned without him and alerted authorities, the Ana news agency said.
Firefighters and the coastguard had focused their searches on Saturday on the western coastal region.
“The hiker was found dead at a difficult place near the Agios Antonios monastery at Chania,” the fire brigade said in a statement.
At least eight tourists, most aged over 60, have been found dead after setting off on hikes on Greek islands this summer, which has been particularly hot.
