A sub-inspector of Islamabad police was suspended and jailed for abusing and illegally detaining two minor children. This incident raises questions about internal accountability in law-enforcement agencies and highlights grave violations of human rights. Such acts weaken the trust of the people in law enforcement, even though it is their first and foremost duty to protect the people, especially the most vulnerable. To ensure accountability, we should demand regular internal inspection procedures in law-enforcement agencies as well as comprehensive training on the rights of children. There should be zero-tolerance for any type of abuse in the police force.
It is crucial that we invest in building a society that upholds their dignity and protects their rights. Protecting the rights of our children and taking care of their wellbeing is our collective responsibility and, to accomplish this task, we must act decisively. The integrity of our society is determined by how we treat our most vulnerable groups.
