Mental health stigma
Mental health is something that is more commonly disregarded and undervalued than any other element of wellbeing. Sadly, in Pakistan, the narrative of mental health is still mostly wrapped around shame and taboo. Mental health issues are, to many people who do not understand them or have never felt the pain of them themselves, nothing more than a personal failing – even an indicator that someone may lack character. Mentally ill individuals are then dealing with something else – stigma, discrimination, and isolation. This fear of judgement prevents an untold number from seeking help, which only serves to increase their pain.
A range of strategies are needed to combat mental health stigma. Education and awareness campaigns are paramount and so are challenging societal norms and attitudes. Making sure that discussions about mental health are normalised within household and community contexts can also be beneficial and increasing access to mental health care is imperative.

In Pakistan, many people are grappling with anxiety, depression and sleeping disorders. These mental health issues predominantly affect teenagers and people in their early twenties. This group is particularly vulnerable to mental health disorders. Mental health is often overlooked in our country due to lack of awareness. The challenges facing mental health care in the country include inadequate resources and limited access.
As individuals, we should support mental health initiatives in Pakistan. This support should include breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, raising awareness, and encouraging access to mental health services.
