ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Tajikistan on Monday agreed to enhance bilateral trade and signed a significant agreement to export 40,000 metric tons of sugar to Tajikistan.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan had already approved the export, facilitating the deal. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Tajikistan’s Director of State of Tajikistan, Ahmadzoda Nurmuhammad Atto. Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir, was also present at the meeting, according to an official statement.

Pakistan’s Trading Corporation of Pakistan, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, and Tajikistan’s State Material Reserve facilitated the agreement. Both countries also agreed to form a joint working group to strengthen trade relations, particularly focusing on food commodities. The statement further highlighted that they plan to explore the establishment of warehouses on both sides of the border to streamline trade.

“We are ready to assist Tajikistan in meeting its food needs,” said Rana Tanveer Hussain, adding that Tajikistan could become a lucrative market for Pakistani products. Atto welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing the potential for Tajikistan to become a major trading partner in food commodities.
