The Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU), formerly known as Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC), has seen significant improvements in its infrastructure and administrative systems over the past few months, said Dr Mahmood Khan, the registrar of the varsity.

He said these changes started to take place on June 1, 2024, and now the campus had been transformed from its previously dilapidated state to a modern and functional institution.

The most visible improvement, he said, had been the rehabilitation of several campus buildings, many of which had been suffering from wear and tear for years. "The conditions of these buildings were poor, with broken walls, damaged roofs, and overall neglect," Dr Khan explained, adding that the renovation had significantly improved the learning environment for both students and faculty.

He said the classroom and lecture hall facilities had undergone significant upgrades in addition to structural improvements. "Previously, classrooms were in a state of disrepair with faulty furniture and outdated technology. Now, we have repaired, repainted and refitted all classrooms with updated equipment, providing a much more comfortable and conducive environment for learning," he remarked.

The registrar also mentioned the implementation of a new payroll system and biometric attendance to address longstanding administrative challenges. “We have moved from the old manual systems to automated solutions that ensure transparency and accuracy,” he explained, adding that the introduction of biometric attendance would improve the efficiency of faculty and staff monitoring.

Transportation, another longstanding issue for students, was also improving, he claimed as he said the varsity was expanding and improving the management of its shuttle service, which was previously unreliable.
