The constitutional amendment bill currently being pursued by the government should be deferred until after the next general elections. This amendment risks undermining the independence of the judiciary and does not align with the best interests of the people of Pakistan. The 18th Amendment, while significant in other respects, compromised judicial independence by altering the appointment and promotion processes within the superior judiciary, in my view. It is also essential to highlight that the proposed constitutional amendment was not part of any party's manifesto, nor was it debated during the last general elections.
Our representatives have a responsibility to ensure that any changes of this magnitude are debated openly and involve full public participation. For the welfare of the people and the continued progress of our beloved nation, I humbly request that they reconsider the current path. I urge them to work towards restoring the judiciary's independence to its pre-18th Amendment state.
