This refers to the letter 'Break time' (September 11, 2024) by Umar M Makhdumi. The writer suggests a two-year break from international cricket for Pakistan. I believe this approach is misguided. A break isn't the solution to the team's prolonged underperformance. Rather, it's time for Pakistan cricket to rise from the ashes. While resting individual players is sensible, withdrawing from cricket entirely is not. As the saying goes: ‘practice makes perfect’. Instead of taking a hiatus, the team should focus on training and hard work to regain form.
It's crucial for the PCB to rethink its strategy. Key players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah could benefit from a rest, allowing domestic performers to step up. Additionally, the proliferation of T20 leagues has burdened our players. The PCB's decision to limit NOCs for players to participate in only one or two leagues is a positive step to manage workload. The PCB should also conduct regular fitness camps and encourage players to participate in domestic cricket to improve their form. This will uplift Pakistani cricket far more than taking a two-year break from international competition.
