ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission probing the alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections has summoned witnesses provided by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on May 6.
The Commission issued notices to the witnesses with the direction to appear before it on May 6, 2013.
The PTI had provided the Commission a list of names of witnesses including Nabeel Gabol, ex-MNA, Najam Sethi, Punjab caretaker chief minister, Javed Iqbal, former Punjab chief secretary, Rao Iftikhar, former Punjab additional chief secretary, Hamid Mir, anchorperson Geo News, and the provincial election commissioner (Punjab) during the 2013 elections.
Similarly, the PTI also provided the Commission names of witnesses including managing directors of the Printing Corporation of Pakistan Press (PCPP) in Karachi, Lahore,
Islamabad (who held office at the time of the acquisition and printing of ballot papers for the 2013 general elections), managing director of the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation Karachi (who held office at the time of acquisition and printing of ballot papers for the 2013 general elections), managing director of Postal Foundation Press at Islamabad (who held office at the time of printing of ballot papers for the 2013 General Elections), Provincial Election Commissioner (Sindh) during the 2013 Elections, Muddasar Rizvi, head of Programmes, Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) and other relevant officers and representative of Fafen and Nadra Chairman Usman Yousaf Mobeen.
It is pertinent to mention here that the General Elections 2013 Inquiry Commission held a hearing on April 29, and held a consultation with all the counsel representing the political parties. During the meeting, it was decided that the political parties may examine their own witnesses on oath to bring on record appropriate documents and may provide a list of witnesses that they wish the Commission to summon, along with a brief statement of the purpose for which they are to be examined. The meeting held that the PTI shall provide a list of the witnesses that they wish the Commission to summon by May 2, 2015, who shall be summoned at 1.00 pm on May 6. It was further directed that it shall produce its own witnesses at 11:30 am on May 5, 2015. In compliance with the Commission’s orders, the PTI on Saturday provided a list of witness names.
