Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon on Thursday presided over a meeting on necessary reforms in the criminal record management system (CRMS).
Officials said the meeting was attended by Karachi’s additional IG, the DIGs of Crime and Investigations Branch, Headquarters, IT, Finance, CIA, Zonal DIGs, officers of the investigation department and other police officers.
The participants of the meeting were given a briefing by the DIG CIA regarding the registration and use of data of criminals in the criminal record office (CRO) under the crime management system. The Sindh police have documented criminal records from 1960 to 2014.
The meeting was informed that the criminal records have been registered in the CRO since 2014 and the CRMS has data of more than 779,000 people so far. Moreover, various government and international organisations are provided with the help of this data on other stages, including employment.
The meeting was briefed that the criminal record office system is also installed in Malir, Central and Women’s jails.
IGP Memon said this system needs to be upgraded further by linking it to Nadra records. In the world, policing and technology are used through data. A committee comprising DIGs Crime and Investigations Branch, CIA, Investigation and IT should be formed, he said, adding that the committee should prepare comprehensive proposals on the upgradation and linkage of the CRO system to Nadra records
He added that the DIG investigation investigates and identifies staff who do not follow the SOP in the registration of criminal data. Officers of all investigation departments must verify that the CRO certificate is attached before presenting the challan in the court. Moreover, under CRMS, the CRO must be connected to the PSRMS.
