Islamabad: Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions Amir Muqam on Thursday said his government wanted dignified return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan to their country.
"Our ailing economy is immensely burdened due to the presence of three million Afghan refugees in the country. We want their dignified repatriation," Muqam told Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Leslie Scanlon during a meeting at the ministry here.
The minister said that Pakistan valued Canada’s interest in the resettlement of Afghan refugees. He said that the country direly needed financial assistance to maintain documented Afghan refugees.
The Canadian high commissioner appreciated the role of Pakistan in extending humanitarian support to Afghan refugees for more than four decades. She discussed with the minister the refugee management and repatriation and other matters of mutual interest.
