This letter refers to the editorial ‘Whitewashed’ (September 4, 2024). While I agree with the editorial’s point that accountability should start from the top, this whitewash also calls for more blunt questions. Do we still have cricketing talent in this nation? The answer is a resounding yes, although it is decreasing due to the fact that there is no significant financial investment in the lower levels of cricket as compared to the top level. Do we have the will, resolve, and determination to improve our cricket and once again become one of the top cricketing nations? The answer is also yes, but with many caveats. So what exactly is stopping us from playing to our best?
I think personal egos and factionalism in the cricketing setup, both on and off the field, have been the biggest threat for some time. Groupings and internal politics have been around for decades, but, in the past, they were managed internally and did not corrode the abundance of talent we had. Now, the PCB appears only to be interested in using the sport as a ‘cash cow’. This game is not all about money.
