Govt urged to prioritise literacy as key to national progress
Islamabad:On the occasion of International Literacy Day, former Federal Minister and Senator Nisar A. Memon emphasized the critical need for Pakistan to prioritize literacy to ensure the nation's socio-economic development. In a press statement released on Friday, Memon urged both the government and private sectors to make concerted efforts to enhance literacy rates across the country, noting that it is fundamental to securing human rights and addressing national challenges.
With Pakistan's adult literacy rate at approximately 70 per cent, Memon highlighted the disparity between Pakistan and its regional and global counterparts. “Sri Lanka boasts a literacy rate of 94 per cent, China stands at 98 per cent, and the USA reaches 99 per cent. These figures illustrate Pakistan’s urgent need to step up its efforts to improve literacy rates, particularly in rural areas and among women,” he stressed.
