ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet was informed in the recent meeting that security situation in Balochistan had gone beyond the existing legal framework, which elicited a vigorous and stern response. According to government sources, the interior ministry informed the federal cabinet that insurgent groups and terrorist networks in Balochistan had become more organised, and they were launching more coordinated operations than ever before, hence special measures in the province. That was why, added the sources, the ministry declared it inevitable to expand the legal tools (legal resources) to effectively deal with the security threats. The ministry proposed to empower the army, forces and the government by amending the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
It may be recalled that the federal cabinet approved an amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 on the proposal of the interior ministry recently and decided to initiate the legislative process for an amendment to Section 11EE, which would make the army and security forces more effective against terrorism. All operations launched against terrorists would be protected legally, added the sources.
The security forces would be empowered to detain anyone suspected of terrorist activities for a period not exceeding three months.
