This is with reference to the letter ‘Spare us the math’ (September 3, 2024) by Sadam Hussain. While it is understandable that some students in the faculty of arts may feel challenged by math courses, it is important to recognize the broader value that mathematics offers, even to those pursuing a BA in English. Math is not just about numbers and formulas; it cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and logical reasoning, all of which are essential in any field, including the humanities.
These skills are invaluable in any profession, whether one is writing, analyzing literature, or engaging in research. The belief that math courses harm GPAs assumes students are incapable of succeeding in these subjects, which underestimates their potential. With proper support, students can overcome math challenges, just as they do in other areas. Education is about embracing challenges that promote growth, not just pursuing what is easy.
