ISLAMABAD: The new Chairman of Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), Lt. Gen Akhtar Nawaz Satti, is the 27th chairman of the FPSC. All the chairmen appointed before him belonged to the judiciary, civil service and armed forces and were appointed to this important post after their retirement.
The FPSC chairmen appointed from the armed forces: Colonel ASB Shah was appointed chairman in 1958, Lt. Gen Atiqur Rehman in 1977, Admiral (retd) M Sharif in 1986, Lt. Gen (retd) Mumtaz Gul in 1997, Air Marshal Shafiq Haider in 2002, Lt Gen (retd) Jamshed Gulzar Kayani in 2003, Lt Gen (retd) Shahid Hamid in 2006 and Maj Gen (retd) Niaz Mohammad Khan Khattak was appointed in 2014. In this way, Lt. Gen Akhtar Nawaz Satti is the ninth FPSC chairman from the armed forces.
Mian Afzal Hussain was the first chairman in 1947, Zakir Hussain was appointed in 1952, Mian Aminuddin in 1957, Qazi Anwarul Haq in 1963, Agha Abdul Hameed in 1965, Nazir Ahmed in 1966, Ali Asghar in 1969 and S Manzoor Elahi was appointed in 1972.
From judiciary, Justice (retd) Faizullah Kundi was appointed FPSC chairman in 1972, Justice (retd) Zafar Hussain Mirza in 1994 and Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwan Das was appointed in 2009. Thus, three chairmen were from the judiciary.
IGP (retd) Malik Asif Hayat was appointed chairman in 2012, Zahoor Anwar in 1991, Naveed Akram Cheema in 2014 and Haseeb Athar was appointed in 2018. Maruf Afzal was nominated FPSC chairman but he died due to corona. Zahid Saeed was appointed chairman in 2020 and Shahid Ashraf Tarar in 2023.
