PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has sent to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) the complaints of the consumers about increase in tariff and taxes in the electricity bills.

A two-member PHC bench comprising Justice Syed Arshad Ali Shah and Justice Shahid Khan heard the writ petition about the increase in electricity tariff and the imposition of taxes.Amir-ur-Rahman and Bilal Jan appeared for the petitioners. Nepra was represented by Farooq Afridi Advocate. Additional Attorney General Sanaullah and Federal Board of Revenue’s lawyer Rahmanullah also appeared in the court.

During the hearing, Justice Syed Arshad Ali remarked that it was not possible for the court to issue an order in this case for the entire country. He said that Nepra was supposed to redress the complaints of the consumers about the imposition of taxes in the electricity bills. He said the Supreme Court had declared null and void the decision of the Lahore High Court in a similar case.

Amir-ur-Rahman, the lawyer for the petitioners, told the bench that the government was fleecing the people in the name of electricity bills. He said the electricity bills contained heavy taxes. He said the KP produced surplus electricity.
