True democracy
This letter refers to the article 'A menace to democracy' (August 22, 2024) by Engineer Khurram Dastgir-Khan. Our institutions have mostly failed the nation and this is really alarming for the future of Pakistan. The politicians produced by our extra-political interference, flawed elections and general palace intrigues can by no means be democrats. They are more like lords or nobles.
Leaders like the writer and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and some other reasonable people should take the lead and set an example as to how politicians should behave in a democracy. They should help show us that democracy is more than elections hullabaloo and that it is important to strive for rule of law, a free media, tolerance, dialogue and transparency etc. These are the pillars of democracy.
