Cop killed, another hurt in shootout with robbers

A police constable was gunned down and another was wounded during a shoot-out with suspected robbers in Sohrab Goth late on Tuesday night, according to the District East police chief.

SSP Farrukh Raza said that patrolling police officials had received information that some robbers were present at the bank of the Mohammadi Goth river with the intention of looting. As soon as the officials arrived on the scene, the suspects allegedly opened fire on them, following which the police officials retaliated and wounded the suspects, who left their motorbike on the spot and ran towards the river, prompting the law enforcers to chase them.

Constables Adil Pitafi and Chaman Abbas were injured in the cross-firing and then taken to a hospital. Abbas, who was said to be in a critical condition due to being shot in the chest, died during treatment. The martyred cop was posted at the SITE Super Highway police station.

Police collected spent bullet shells from the site of the shoot-out and sent them to the forensic division for examination. Officials said that efforts are being made to arrest the suspects. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has asked SSP Raza for a report on the incident. He ordered the immediate arrest of the suspects. He also ordered providing the best medical facilities to the wounded policeman.
