Karachi: Ayesha Mumtaz, a schoolgirl from Sargodha, has made her mark at the Asian Junior and School Boxing Championship in Al Ain by qualifying for the semifinal of Asian Junior and School Boxing Championship and securing a bronze medal for Pakistan in the event.
In a stellar performance during the quarterfinals, she secured her place in the semi-finals, ensuring at least a bronze medal. Her impressive display of skills and strategy led to a victory over Thi Hong Yen Nguyen of Vietnam. Competing in the pinweight (46kg) category, Mumtaz, the sole representative from Pakistan in the schoolgirls’ event, exhibited exceptional technical prowess. Her strategic left-handed hooks and precise attacks were instrumental in her victory over Nguyen.
This win not only confirmed her a medal but also made her only the second Pakistani female boxer to win a medal at the Asian Boxing Championships. The other female Pakistani is Hadiya Kamal, who won bronze in the 2022 edition after receiving a direct entry into the semi-finals.
The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) has lauded Mumtaz’s achievement, acknowledging the dedication and effort of both the athlete and her support team. The Federation’s President, Muhammad Khalid Mahmood, extended his congratulations to Mumtaz, her coach, and her family.
