ISLAMABAD: Former Senate chairman Raza Rabbani on Monday condemned the Punjab government for introducing the Punjab Labour Code, 2024 and the Sindh government for toying with the idea of introducing the Sindh Labour Code, saying the new code has opened the door to greater exploitation and insecurity for the working class.
“The code undermines job security, legalises the exploitative contract system, restricting trade unions and potentially legislating bonded labour,” he said in a statement on Monday. He said the Sindh government should take the labour unions into confidence before giving final shape to the code. “The hypocrisy is glaring,” he added.
The former Senate chairman said the government does not give protection to the rights of the labour class and only talks about them. “The workers of Pakistan cannot be left to the mercy of the exploitative employers or the elite.”
