The Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) has officially been converted into Karachi Metropolitan University, yet the transition has been marked by a lack of accessible information and communication channels.

The university currently has no dedicated website, and the existing KMDC website has not been updated to reflect the change. Details about the new vice chancellor are also missing, and the official university phone numbers (+9221) 99260301 and 99260304 are non-functional.

To add to the confusion, the website lists an incorrect phone number, 0213-21-99260301, at the top left. The error lies in the unusual use of the code “0213” instead of the standard “021” for official numbers, followed by the number series. This has effectively rendered communication between the public and the university impossible.

The rebranding of the KMDC as Karachi Metropolitan University has also sparked potential confusion due to the presence of a similarly named private institution, the Metropolitan University of Karachi. An online search for the new public university leads users to the private university’s website, highlighting the challenges the public faces in navigating the university’s digital presence.

Dr Wasim Qazi, the first permanent vice chancellor of the Karachi Metropolitan University, acknowledged the issues, stating that he has been in office for two weeks, though the institution was rebranded 10 months ago. He pointed out that the delay in appointing a VC and the lack of funding contributed to the current situation.

Dr Qazi vowed that efforts are underway to resolve these issues, including reopening the university’s phone lines and developing a new website. He expressed confidence that the situation would improve soon.
