LAHORE: Hub Dam, built on Hub River, filled to its maximum conservation level of 339 feet above mean sea level on September 1, 2024 at 06:40 a.m.

According to a spokesman of Water & Power Development Authority (Wapda), the live water storage recorded at the reservoir stands at 646,000 acre-feet.

This storage of water in Hub Dam is anticipated to sustain the water supply requirements for Karachi, and Hub City, District Lasbella, Balochistan for approximately the next three years. The safe passage of excess water through the spillway is currently in operation.

It may be noted that the Hub Dam’s construction was completed in 1981. It was built for ensuring water supply and irrigation requirements in addition to flood control in the area. Its original capacity was 1.24 million acre-feet.

Hub River originates in the Pab Mountains of Balochistan. The Command area of the dam helps irrigate around 16,000 acres of land in the Lasbela District. Additionally, its construction leads to meeting the drinking water needs of Karachi city.

An important aspect of Hub Dam has been its significant contribution towards ecosystem. It supports aquatic life and helps maintain the diverse ecosystem of the Hub River delta.

In short, the Hub Dam plays a vital role in managing water resources in Southern parts of Balochistan and Sindh provinces, including its support to agriculture, industry, and urban centers like Karachi.
