HYDERABAD: Intermittent rain continued in Hyderabad on Friday, leaving a large area of the city submerged. Routine life was affected due to water accumulation in several low-lying areas of Hyderabad city, Latifabad, Qasimabad, and rural tehsils.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, more than 160 millimetres of rain was recorded in Hyderabad district between August 26 and Friday, August 30.

The performance of the local governments, district administration and Water and Sanitation Agency in Hyderabad was even criticised by the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). In a statement, Hyderabad District PPP Information Secretary Ehsan Abro decried the performance of the municipal administration stating that the roads in Qasimabad and the adjacent areas were completely submerged in water.

He said the Sindh chief minister had already released funds amounting to millions of rupees to the Hyderabad deputy commissioner (DC) for dealing with the emergency situation in the city, but the DC seemed to have no idea about the performance of his subordinate administration.

Abro said the situation in Hyderabad city, including Latifabad and Qasimabad, was worse on Friday than it was on Thursday. The PPP office-bearer demanded that the local government in Hyderabad take immediate and effective measures for drainage of rainwater and provide relief to the people.

He also appealed to Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro and Hyderabad Deputy Commissioner Zainul Aabdin Memon to take immediate notice on public complaints. He said the public representatives who showed incompetence in emergency situations should be held accountable.
