The Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Thursday hosted an event in honour of veteran journalist and writer Mahmood Shaam. The KPC awarded him its honorary membership on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Shaam praised the KPC for its efforts to address the issues of journalists in an organised manner. The club had played a key role in all the major and significant struggles for press freedom in the country, he said.
Journalists and rights activists on the occasion paid tribute to Shaam for his services for journalism.
Labour leader Habibuddin Junaidi, former KPC secretary Maqsood Yousufi, columnist Shamim Akhtar, academic Prof Jaffar Ahmed and others addressed the gathering.
Shaam said it was a matter of pride for him to be honoured with an honorary membership of the KPC. Members of the KPC had always upheld journalistic principles, he said, adding that the KPC also actively struggled against restrictions imposed on newspapers.
He also recalled the services of Minhaj Barna and other leaders of the press freedom movement.
Yousufi said the KPC had always adopted a constructive mindset and avoided violence and extremist attitudes.
Shamim was of the view that our newspapers had faced restrictions and the KPC always stood for better work conditions for journalists.
KPC Secretary Shoaib Ahmed said the press club had always prioritised propagation of positive values.
