Over 3.7m traffic violators caught in eight months

LAHORE:Lahore Traffic Police caught over 3.7 million individuals violating traffic laws during the last eight months in the provincial capital, with motorcyclists leading the list of offenders.

More than 1.24 million citizens were penalised for violating lane and stop line rules. Additionally, 352,488 vehicles were targeted for driving without licence. Some 249,000 motorcyclists were ticketed for riding without helmet. Moreover, 50,406 vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws were impounded for underage driving. Some 17,255 smoke-emitting vehicles were impounded by various police stations. The authorities also seized 166,000 vehicles for operating without number plates or with applied-for registration. Some 29,000 drivers penalized for violating one-way traffic rules and 93,277 for obstructing the flow of traffic.

Furthermore, 36,000 drivers were fined for violating red lights, and 21,000 for not wearing seat belts. The use of mobile phones while driving led to action against 45,643 people. According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Ammara Athar, the fines for violations such as driving without a helmet, one-way traffic breaches, wrong parking, excessive smoke emissions, and driving without a license stand at Rs 2,000. The CTO emphasised that the purpose of these actions is to ensure the supremacy of traffic laws and maintain an organised flow of traffic. "The aim of issuing challans is not to generate revenue but to correct the behaviour of citizens," stated the CTO.
