PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur on Tuesday directed a comprehensive crackdown on illegal buses, vans, and other transport vehicles operating on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes in the provincial capital.

The move is aimed at alleviating growing traffic congestion and addressing safety concerns posed by unauthorised public transport vehicles.

During a meeting held at the commissioner’s office in Peshawar, which was attended by key government officials, including Member National Assembly Shandana Gulzar, Minister for Excise and Taxation Mian Khaleeq-ur-Rehman, Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi, Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mahsud, and other relevant authorities, a series of decisive measures were discussed and approved to improve the traffic situation in the provincial capital.

The commissioner expressed concern over the impact of illegal transport on the smooth flow of traffic along the BRT routes. Following the discussions, directives were issued to the traffic police, Regional Transport Authority, and district administration to take immediate action against these illegal transport operators.

In addition to targeting illegal buses and vans, the commissioner ordered a crackdown on the use of unauthorized gas cylinders in public transport vehicles, which pose significant safety risks. Authorities were instructed to seize these cylinders and take legal action against those involved in their sale and use.

The meeting also addressed other public safety concerns, including the use of flashlights, pressure horns, and other devices in public transport vehicles that contribute to public discomfort. The Transport Department was directed to enforce regulations on rickshaws operating in Peshawar by issuing proper route permits and conducting a comprehensive survey to determine the exact number of rickshaws required in the city.

Riaz Mahsud also instructed the director general of the Peshawar Development Authority to prepare recommendations for maintaining smooth traffic flow on BRT routes and addressing factors contributing to traffic congestion. These recommendations are to be presented in an upcoming meeting.

This crackdown is part of a broader initiative to combat pollution and improve traffic management in Peshawar.
