Failed rain prep
The heavy rains and resultant flash floods in July and August have been devastating. Tragically, around 200 people have lost their lives to the heavy rains and many have also sustained serious injuries. The damage to infrastructure, private properties, livestock and crops has also been severe. Every monsoon, we witness similar devastation. This time, even though heavy rains were forecast as early as June, we were not well prepared and the results were the same. The relevant federal departments and provincial governments remain apathetic and incapable of effectively dealing with these disasters, despite having significant budgets at their disposal.
It is also clear that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) lacks the capacity, capability, and, in my opinion, the will to handle the situation. It is imperative that our government organizations take proactive steps and demonstrate the competence required to protect lives and property during the monsoon season. The continuous neglect and inadequate responses are unacceptable and must be addressed urgently.
