Supreme Court Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar on Saturday urged the young lawyers to work hard and fight for legal and fundamental rights for both haves and have-nots.

Addressing the graduation convocation of Denning law school at hotel in Karachi, Justice Mazhar told the new law graduates that it is essential to remember that for being a good lawyer, mere knowledge of the law and courtroom skills are not enough, as it also requires firm commitment to the principles of justice, integrity and fairness.

He said that new lawyers must know that they will face countless challenges and also have multiple opportunities. He said that in the context of the Constitution, the crucial role of lawyers would be safeguarding the fundamental rights and liberties of every individual within the robust framework of human rights.

“We as legal professionals are obligated to uphold these principles with unwavering dedication and protect these rights not just as a professional duty but a moral imperative as well,” he said.

Justice Mazhar also referred a famous quote of Martin Luther King Jr that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. He said this quote underscores the mutuality of justice with the importance of vigilance and courage in the face of injustice.

He also told the business administration’s graduates who were awarded graduation degrees at the convocation that skills and knowledge they have acquired will enable them to navigate complex business environments and their ability to make ethical decisions will be paramount in achieving both personal and organisational success.

Another Supreme Court judge, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and judges of the Sindh High Court also attended the convocation.
