Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi on Friday recently visited the Emergency Response Unit for Polio Eradication in the Gujro Union Committee, District East.

On Thursday, he chaired an evening meeting at the site, and on Friday he, along with Deputy Commissioner East Shehzad Fazal Abbasi, inspected the vaccination process using jet injectors in Noor Muhammad Goth, Gujro.

During the visit, Naqvi emphasised that polio eradication was a national priority and that the challenge of eliminating the virus from Gujro requires coordinated and vigorous efforts. He noted the recent decrease in polio cases in Gujro as a positive sign of progress and stressed the need for a unified national effort to completely eradicate the disease.

The meeting was briefed by Syed Qaim Akbar, Coordinator of the Emergency Response Unit, who reported that Gujro remained the most sensitive and affected union council, with recent environmental samples testing positive for polio. Attendees included Saud Yaqoob, Coordinator of the Karachi Polio Task Force, Azim Khawaja, Team Leader of UNICEF Sindh, and members of the polio team and social mobilisers.

The commissioner was informed that, on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, special measures were being implemented to combat polio in Gujro. These measures included providing clean drinking water, installing six RO plants, improving the drainage system, and enhancing health facilities at Jannat Gul Hospital. Additionally, with support from UNICEF, a special maternity home and nutrition consultation units have been established to support the health of mothers and children.
