HYDERABAD: Deputy Commissioner Zainul Aabdin Memon has said the only way to protect children up to five years of age against polio virus is to give them anti-polio drops.

On Thursday, a case of polio virus was confirmed in Munira, a 29 month-old girl, in UC 50 of the Hyderabad district.

Briefing the media in his office on Friday, the DC said the 29-month-old tested positive for polio, which is 99% similar to the environmental samples collected, while the affected girl had had regular anti-polio doses.

He said the girl had been under treatment at the Civil Hospital for eight days, where doctors suspected polio virus and sent her sample to Islamabad for testing.

He said refusal cases are being checked immediately in five nearby union councils where the polio case was reported.

He said the main reason for the spread of polio virus is the refusal cases during the campaign, and all possible measures have been taken by the administration to address the issue.

DC Memon said the first case of Hyderabad and the second case of the province has emerged this year.
