Man found dead in BRB Canal

LAHORE:A 44-year-old man was found dead in the Bambawali Ravi-Bedian (BRB) Canal near Batapur on Thursday. Passersby spotted the man's body floating in the canal and alerted the police. It has yet to be determined whether the man, who has not yet been identified, committed suicide or was thrown into the canal after being killed. The body was sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

3,485 gamblers arrested

Lahore police have registered 808 cases and arrested 3,485 individuals during various operations against gamblers this year. The spokesperson also reported that the police registered 7,206 cases related to illegal arms possession and the display of arms. From these operations, they recovered 104 Kalashnikovs, 445 rifles, 246 guns, 6,337 pistols, and 35,898 bullets from the arrested individuals.

Man killed in house fire

A 35-year-old man was killed in a fire that broke out in a house near Gawalmandi Girls College. The deceased was identified as Ibadullah son of Ahmed. Emergency services from Rescue 1122 responded to the call about the fire. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to extinguish the blaze. Once the fire was under control, the charred body of Ibadullah was found inside the house. The body was sent to the morgue.

Rs124.7m scholarships given to cops’ children

Under the education-friendly vision of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr Usman Anwar, record scholarships are being issued for higher education of police employees’ children.

On IG Punjab’s instructions, priority efforts have been accelerated for educational welfare of police force children, with Rs1 billion being allocated this year for this initiative. He said that 1,445 students pursuing BS Honors have been awarded scholarships totaling over Rs82.2 million to cover their fees. This amount has been distributed to students enrolled in BS Honors degree programs across various districts, including Lahore. Similarly, Rs41.8 million in scholarships have been awarded to 489 students enrolled in Information Technology degree programs. In total, over Rs124.7 million has been distributed to students in both categories.

Road accidents

The Emergency Services Department (ESD) responded to 1,242 road accidents in all districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours. In these road accidents, 11 people died, whereas 1,319 were injured. Out of these, 560 people with serious injuries were shifted to different hospitals. The majority (76%) of these incidents involved motorbikes, underscoring the critical need for effective enforcement of traffic laws and lane discipline to curb the rising number of road accidents. Furthermore, the analysis showed those 756 drivers, 42 underage drivers, 154 pedestrians, and 420 passengers were among the victims of road traffic crashes.
