No breadwinners left for family of Karsaz reckless driving victims

Family members and local political leaders on Tuesday attended the funeral prayers for a man and his daughter who were killed as a result of reckless driving on Karsaz on Monday.

Moreover, an FIR of the incident was also lodged.

On Monday evening, a 26-year-old MBA student, Amina, and her father Imran Arif, son of Shahzad, 60, were killed and another man, Abdul Salam, son of Ishaq, was seriously injured when a speeding jeep driven by a woman rammed into vehicles and motocycles on Karsaz within the limits of the Bahadurabad police station.

With the help of the public, police arrested the woman and seized her Land Cruiser.

The man and his daughter who died in the accident were residents of Scheme 33 and their funeral prayers were offered at the Memon Mosque in Gulzar-e-Hijri. Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Munim Zafar and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Alamgir Khan were among those who attended the funeral prayers.

Later, the deceased were buried in the Model Graveyard.

According to the family members and police, both Imran and Amina were breadwinners of their family. Amina was completing her MBA alongside doing job in a private firm to support her family. Her father used to sell bread on a bicycle in the area in the morning. In the evening, he sold crackers and French fries at a stall near his house.

On Monday evening, he was taking his daughter home from her office on his motorcycle when the two became victims of reckless driving.

Police registered a case No 229/24 under the sections 320, 337G, 279 and 427 against the woman on the complaint of Imtiaz Arif, brother of Imran.

The complainant stated in the FIR that he was a resident of Malir Cantonment. On Monday evening, he received a phone call informing him that his elder brother Imran had met an accident on Karsaz Road while he was travelling with his daughter Amina.

He rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he came to know that his brother had died as a result of reckless driving by the woman who hit his motorcycle from behind.

The FIR stated that both Imran and Amina received injuries in their head and other parts of the body, which caused their death.

SSP Farrukh Raza, chief of the District East police, confirmed in a statement that an FIR had been registered in connection with the road accident. After the registration of the FIR, the driver was arrested and her custody was handed over to the investigation wing.

The SSP also denied the reports circulating on social media that claimed that the police were not acting fast enough. He clarified that the police conducted a timely operation and arrested the driver woman.

The officer added that since the police suspected that the driver could be intoxicated, she was sent to a hospital as per the rules. The Jinnah hospital authorities had been asked in writing to give their examination report, he said.

SSP Raza remarked that no one was above the law and since the accident, the law had been clearly followed by the police. He said that in the stages to follow, the investigation wing would submit a challan in the court so that the case could be decided on merit.

Investigation Officer Inspector Amir Altaf told the media that it could not be conclusively stated at this stage that the driver was intoxicated. He added that they had sought important documents, including the suspect’s driving licence.
