As I read about the latest terrorist attacks on our soil, I can't help but feel a sense of deja vu. We must adopt a new approach that addresses the root causes of terrorism. The resurgence of the TTP and Al Qaeda with safe havens in Afghanistan demands immediate action. We need to engage with the Afghan government at three levels: bilateral, regional and global. Bilaterally, we need to incentivize the Taliban to dismantle these groups on their soil. Regionally, we must raise awareness of the threat they pose to regional security. Globally, forums like the UN can be used to highlight the dangers of these sanctuaries to international security.
We must also prioritize preventing the TTP from establishing a foothold in Pakistan, particularly along the Afghan border. However, counter-terrorism isn't just about military action. Building societal resilience is equally crucial. We must also increase socioeconomic opportunities, reduce political marginalization, improve governance and neutralize social networks that propagate violent extremism. As a frontline province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa deserves priority in resource allocation for both counter-terrorism and preventing violent extremism.
