KARACHI: The Sindh Mines and Minerals Department (SMMD) has expressed disappointment over a letter by Deputy Commissioner, Malir, Irfan Saleem Mirwani, accusing the department officials of aiding illegal excavation and transportation of sand and gravel in District Malir.
Mirwani’s letter submitted to the commissioner Karachi alleged that illegal sand and gravel excavation had resumed in various parts of District Malir. He claimed this activity was being carried out with the support of the station house officer concerned and the field staff of the department.
The department spokesperson has countered the allegation, noting that the current SHO was appointed only 10 days ago, following the removal of the previous SHO over complaints. He said either Mirwani’s letter was based on outdated information or he was misinformed. He reaffirmed the department stance against illegal excavation and expressed readiness to take action against those involved.
On the other hand, following directions from Additional Inspector General of Police, Karachi, Javed Alam Odho, DIG East Ghulam Azfar Mahesar has initiated an inquiry. The inquiry involved summoning SHO Mines and Minerals Zahid Khonharo and SHO Memon Goth Sarfraz Jatoi to record their statements. Mahesar was instructed to conduct an immediate investigation and submit a report within three days. Odho directed his subordinates to halt any illegal activity and ensure strict departmental action against the police officials involved.
Sources have informed The News that illegal excavation and transportation of sand and gravel was a big issue of the area and was being orchestrated by a powerful police officer who is a brother of a senior Sindh government bureaucrat.
