Crime can be defeated with technology, modern tools: IGP
Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon on Tuesday said that the world is using cameras and modern technology to prevent crime, and that crime can be defeated only with the use of effective technology and modern tools.
The Sindh police chief was attending the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club Karachi at a hotel. Rotary Club Karachi President Shoaib Ismail and other members were present on the occasion.
Memon said the Sindh police have also installed face-recognition cameras equipped with modern technology at the entry and exit points to make cities safe, while 1,200 cameras are also going to be installed under the inner-city Safe City Project.
He said that a plan is also under consideration to issue challan tickets containing traffic fines with the help of cameras for violations of traffic rules.
Due to economic instability, the unemployment rate has increased, because of which crime has not only increased in societies but their places of flourishing have also increased, he added.
He also said the police alone cannot be held responsible for tackling all social evils, but when it comes to criticism for reform, all the stakeholders can vote positively or
negatively.
“We’re striving to establish and promote people-friendly policing and environment by taking on board well-known personalities and other stakeholders associated with different communities and walks of life.”
He pointed out that funds are being provided to police stations for effective and autonomous policing against crime, while at the same time, responsibilities are being assigned to officers of good reputation.
He remarked that in addition to all of that, budget provided to police stations on an experimental basis has shown a marked reduction in crime and corruption.
The IGP said that nowhere in the world are the police criticised in the same way as the Sindh police are, but the foolproof security arrangements provided by the Sindh police on the arrival of 46,000 domestic and foreign guests, including the Dawoodi Bohra community’s spiritual leader, during Muharram surprised the world.
He asked everyone to appreciate the good experiences and traditions with the police department in the same way any negative action is talked about or made public.
“Remember that the Sindh police works 12 hours a day for the public’s safety. Its officers and jawans don’t hesitate to make any sacrifice. They consider it an honour to fight bravely and be martyred.”
Later, answering the questions of the meeting’s participants, he said the Sindh police would fill 25,000 posts in phases, adding that these recruitments would be the largest
in terms of number, and would not only reduce the duty hours of the personnel but also increase their
capabilities.
