Elusive peace
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, occurred in Tehran. Although Israel has not yet commented on Haniyeh’s assassination, there is speculation that the motive behind the killing may have been to benefit Zionist interests. Haniyeh, a key figure within Hamas, was elected as the head of its political bureau in 2017. Known for his pragmatic approach, Haniyeh played a crucial role in negotiating ceasefires during previous Israel-Gaza conflicts and maintained close ties with Hamas’s allies.
He was also recognized for fostering relationships with leaders of various Palestinian factions, including those who were rivals to Hamas. Haniyeh’s death marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conflict with Israel, with potential ramifications for both regional politics and the internal dynamics of Palestinian leadership. This tragic event underscores that peace remains a distant dream.
