The Sindh government has decided to digitise and automate the transport department and commercial vehicle sectors.

The digitisation of the department’s subsidiaries, including SMTA, PTA, RTA and Trans Karachi, has also commenced, officials said on Thursday. A meeting was held in Karachi under the chairmanship of Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport, Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Sharjeel Inam Memon.

He received a briefing on the digitisation and automation of the transport department and commercial vehicles. He stated that with the digitisation and automation of the transport department, PTAs were being connected under a software system. This will facilitate inter-provincial route permits and streamline the entire process.

The minister said the system for issuing and renewing route permits is being made online. With digitisation, transporters will be able to apply for and renew route permits online, making the issuance of route permits, fitness certificates, and body makers’ permits easier and more efficient, he added.

Memon said that a public complaint centre will also be established, with all information being collected in the secretariat. He issued directions for fortnightly progress reports on the digitisation and automation system.

He said that bringing the transport system online would increase revenue and that the use of modern technology would bring transparency to the system. In the first phase, the vehicle fitness certificate system was going online, and digitisation wouuld also help reduce accidents, allowing passengers to travel more safely.
